Field Hockey Defeats Monmouth 8-1
October 01, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- The Princeton field hockey team continued to clock offensively, scoring eight times in Sunday's 8-1 win over Monmouth. The win came a day after the Tigers scored six goals in a shutout at Cornell.
Princeton took control of Sunday's game early as sophomore Katie Kinzer scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season 4:16 into the game. The goal gave Princeton the lead for good and was Kinzer's fourth game winner of the season. Junior Nicole Ng played the ball into the circle on a free hit before Kizner deflected it into the cage.
Sophomore Sarah Reinprecht made the score 2-0 2:13 later with a goal in a penalty stroke. It was her first successful penalty stroke attempt this season as she fired the ball just inside the post on the goalkeeper's blocker side.
Princeton extended its lead to 3-0 at 12:40 when junior Sarah Yuki scored her first of three goals in the game. Ng carried the ball into the circle and took two shots that were saved by Monmouth goalkeeper Chelsea Farley, but Monmouth was unable to clear the rebound of the second shot and Yuki scored her first goal of the season.
Monmouth scored its only goal of the game 44 seconds later when Kelly Crist found the ball on the side of the goal after Princeton senior goalkeeper dove to block a previous shot.
Princeton quickly regained the three-goal lead 59 seconds later when Yuki scored her second goal of the contest. Junior Paige Schmidt took the initial shot and Yuki directed it into the top half of the net just in front of Farley.
Princeton scored twice more in the opening half. Sophomore Holly McGarvie batted in the rebound of a shot from sophomore Leah Hoagland for her fifth goal of the season and her fifth goal in the past two games. Yuki completed the scoring in the half with her third goal as she directed in a pass from Kinzer.
The Tigers added a pair of goals in the second half to reach the 8-1 final. At 41:19, Reinprecht scored her second goal of the game and third of the season on a penalty corner with Schmidt notching an assist. The final goal came at 51:26 when freshman Kaitlin Donovan caught a long pass and rushed into the circle. She faked the shot to draw the goalkeeper out and then stepped to the side to score her second goal of the season.
Simon made two saves to post the win in her first appearance this season. Farley took the loss despite making 13 saves.
Princeton scored 14 goals in two games over the weekend, doubling the 14 goals the Tigers had scored in their previous seven games this season.
The Tigers improved to 6-3 overall and remained 4-0 in Ivy League play with their third-staright win. Princeton visits 10th-ranked Connecticut next Saturday.
