Princeton Opens Season By Tying Bentley 3-3

WEST ORANGE, N.J. -- The Princeton men's hockey team opened the 2006-07 season on Friday night with a 3-3 tie with Bentley at Codey Arena in West Orange, N.J. Freshman Mark Magnowski scored a goal and added an assist and senior captain Darroll Powe had two helpers in the tie.
Princeton took a 3-0 lead in the game, only to have Bentley rally back to tie the game in the third period. Princeton had several chances late but couldn't break the deadlock and the game ended tied up at three goals apiece.
Princeton took a 1-0 lead in penalty-full opening period. Seven of the game's 10 penalties came in the opening stanza. Princeton capitalized on a four-on-four to take the lead midway through the period. Magnowski worked the puck to Powe who fed freshman Brad Schroeder sneaking in from the point. Schroeder froze Bentley goaltender Ray Jean the fired a shot over his shoulder for Princeton's first goal of the season and the first goal of his career.
Princeton's best period was the second as the Tigers sent 20 shots on Jean and scored twice. Junior Landis Stankievech scored his first goal of the season two minutes into the period after senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller made an outstanding play stickhandling in the Bentley zone. Goeckner-Zoeller gave the puck to Stankievech, whose shot through a screen eluded Jean and gave Princeton the 2-0 lead. Sophomore Brandan Kushniruk also assisted on the goal.
Magnowski made the score 3-0 at 10:36 of the period as he drove to the Bentley net and backhanded a shot through the legs of Jean. Powe corralled the puck along the Princeton boards and fired a pass across the ice to Magnowski. There Magnowski sense a direct path to the net and drove to the net, going to the backhand and notching his second point of the evening.
Bentley jumped on the scoreboard less than four minutes later to make the game 3-1 with a power-play goal. Jeff Gumaer received a pass at the back door and slid it into the open Tiger net for Bentley's first goal of the night.
The score remained 3-1 through most the third period until Bentley scored twice in a 53-second span in the game's final five minutes to even the score and force overtime. Anders Olson made the score 3-2 when he scored in the top left corner of the net from the slot after Pat Percella fed him the puck from behind the net. Fifty-three seconds later Gumaer scored his second goal of the game as he deflected a point shot from Bobby Pearce through a screen and into the Tiger net.
Princeton outshot the Falcons 47-33 for the game. Princeton freshman goaltender Zane Kalemba and sophomore goaltender Thomas Sychterz split the game in goal. Kalemba made 15 saves on 15 shots in the first 30:36, while Sychterz allowed three goals on 18 shots in the final 34:24. Jean made 44 saves for Bentley.
Princeton is now 0-0-1 on the season while Bentley is now 1-2-1. The two teams conclude their series tomorrow night at Baker Rink at 7 p.m.
