Peteraf's 79th-Minute Goal Sinks Cornell, 1-0
October 28, 2006 | Women's Soccer
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sarah Peteraf picked a great time to score her second goal of the season. With 11:41 to go in regulation at Cornell Saturday, the Princeton sophomore broke a scoreless tie and continued the Tiger women's soccer team's winning streak to three games with a 1-0 victory.
The goal came on an assist from junior Melissa Whitley, who made a pass across the goal mouth to Peteraf at the right post.
The win enables Princeton to keep its chance at keeping another streak going. Sporting an even overall record (7-7-1, 2-4-0 Ivy) for the first time in a month, the Tigers can continue into a winning season streak that began in 1996 with a win over Penn next week at Lourie-Love Field.
Two more positive streaks were extended Saturday. The shutout was Princeton's third straight and the Tiger defense, in front of goalkeeper Maren Dale, hasn't allowed a goal in 303:13. The win was also Princeton's 11th in a row over Cornell.
Peteraf had six of Princeton's 21 shots as only freshman Vicki Anagnostopoulous, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the week after scoring four goals against Harvard last Saturday, fired more with seven chances. Cornell had only 10 shots, resulting in five saves for Dale. Big Red keeper Taylor Hendren had 10 saves.
Next Saturday's match against the Quakers will begin at 4 p.m. The team will honor its three seniors, Amanda Ferranti, Meghan Farrell and Christina Costantino, before the game.
