Pearce?s Three Points Leads Tigers to 3-2 Win Over Rensselaer
November 11, 2006 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Senior Kim Pearce had a goal and two assists to lead the ninth-ranked Princeton women's hockey team to a 3-2 win over Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon at Baker Rink. Princeton took control of the game with two goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead after two.
The win extended Princeton's season-opening unbeaten streak to eight games as Princeton is 6-0-2 on the season and 6-0-1 and atop the league standings in the ECAC Hockley League.
Tied at 1-1 in the second period, Pearce drove to the net on a breakaway attempt. She was tied up which would have drawn a Rensselaer penalty but got the puck to the net where it bounced to junior Lizzie Keady, who had been trailing the play. Keady pounced on it and scored high for her fourth goal of the season and third of the weekend at 12:15.
Princeton extended the lead to 3-1 at 14:52 of the period when junior Marykate Oakley scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Senior Dina McCumber, returning to the Princeton lineup after missing three with an injury, lofted an outlet pass from her own end that hit Pearce on the Princeton blueline. Pearce came into the RPI zone and held on until a play developed in front of the net. Pearce fed the puck to Oakley who redirected it into the net for the game-winning goal.
The teams traded goals in the opening period as Princeton outshot RPI 6-3. Pearce opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the season 1:43 into the contest. Sophomore Katherine Dineen and McCumber assisted on the goal.
Princeton sophomore netminder Kristen Young made 10 saves for the win, while Anshley Mayr had 21 in the loss.
