In 2005, it was talked about.
Now, in 2006, it has become a reality.
Following the disappointing loss to Yale last season, which had been hyped by many, the “Bonfire Game”, word about a potential bonfire had been kept to a minimum until the completion of the unofficial “H-Y-P Championship”, which Princeton took this weekend by defeating Yale in a thrilling 34-31 comeback victory, in the 129th meeting between the two teams. The victory allows the Tigers to maintain control of the Ivy League race leading into the final weekend of the season, and Princeton to celebrate its first sweep of Harvard and Yale since 1994 with a Friday night bonfire, starting at 6 p.m. on Cannon Green, located behind Nassau Hall on the campus of Princeton University.
Each class at Princeton will have a stint in which they will volunteer their time to construct the bonfire from wood provided by the University. Scheduled for the event are appearances by class leaders, the Princeton University Marching Band and Cheerleaders, and a talk from team captains and Head Coach Roger Hughes, and well as their ceremonial lighting of the bonfire.
The bonfire is being sponsored by the four undergraduate class governments, the Undergraduate Student Government, and the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students (ODUS). For the most up to date information about the event, please visit the ODUS website or call 609.258.5750.
The bonfire also serves as a pep rally for the Saturday, Nov. 18 game, where the Tigers will take on Dartmouth at 1 p.m. for at least a share of the Ivy League title. A Tiger win and Yale loss at Harvard would give the Tigers the title outright. The title would be the Tigers first since 1995. Tickets for the game are still available and can be purchased in person at the Princeton Athletic Ticket Office in Jadwin Gymnasium, by calling 609.258.3538, or by clicking here. The game can be heard on WBUD 1260 AM and GoPrincetonTigers.com, and will also be video streamed LIVE in Tiger Zone, on GoPrincetonTigers.com.
