Tigers Cap Three-Point Weekend With 4-2 Win at Harvard
November 25, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Princeton men's hockey team rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Harvard 4-2 in ECAC Hockey League action on Saturday night at the Bright Hockey Center. The win completed a three-point weekend for the Tigers, who tied Dartmouth on Friday night.
Princeton fell behind 2-0 for the second night in a row, but once again came back from the deficit. The Crimson scored the game first two goals, both coming in the first five minutes of the game. Both goals also came on the power play as the game was marred by a combined 20 penalties. Five of the six goals in the game were scored with the man advantage.
Harvard opened the scoring 3:35 into the game skating with the two-man advantage. Jon Pelle received the puck on the goal line from Ryan Maki and slid it into the Princeton net to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead. Pelle made the score 2-0 less than a minute later, still on the same power play, when he scored his second goal of the game from Brian McCafferty and Paul Dufault.
The Tigers wasted little time getting onto the scoreboard as Princeton drew within a goal at 6:32 of the period when freshman Dan Bartlett scored his second goal of the season on Princeton's first power-play chance of the game. The goal was unassisted. The Tigers outshot Harvard 17-5 in the opening period and cashed in just past midway through the period when freshman Cam MacIntyre scored from in front for his first collegiate goal. The goal was also a power-play tally and was assisted by freshman Mark Magnowski and junior Mike Moore.
Harvard edged Princeton 15-8 in the second period in shots on goal, but Princeton was the only team able to convert as senior Darroll Powe scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season 2:52 into the period from seniors Brett Westgarth and Daryl Marcoux. The goal stood up as the eventual game winner and extended Powe's point-scoring streak to six games.
From that point on, it was freshman goaltender Zane Kalemba and the Tiger penalty kill that stole the show as Kalemba made 29 of his 31 saves in the final two periods, and the Tigers killed off their last six penalties. Kalemba made 31 saves for his second win of the season.
Junior Landis Stankievech closed out the scoring for the Tigers with an empty-net insurance goal with five seconds remaining. The goal was his second of the season.
Princeton improved to 2-6-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the ECACHL while Harvard fell to 3-8-0 overall and 2-7-0 in the league.
The Tigers take next weekend off of league play and will play a pair of non-league games at Alabama-Huntsville.
