Men's Hockey Skates Past Alabama-Huntsville 4-2
December 01, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The Princeton men's hockey team used three power-play goals in the second period to break open a 1-1 game and skate to a 4-2 win over Alabama-Huntsville on Friday night at the Von Braun Center. Senior Darroll Powe was one of three Tigers to tally multiple points in the game as he extended his point-scoring streak to seven games.
The Tigers took control of things in the second period with three power-play goals. Powe started the flurry less than two minutes into the period when he scored his sixth goal of the season on a semi-breakaway. Senior Daryl Marcoux began the play by passing the puck out of the defensive zone to sophomore Lee Jubinville who drew the UAH defenders at the blueline before spring Powe with the pass. Powe faked forehand before sliding a backhander into the Charger net.
Princeton made the score 3-1 1:21 later when sophomore Brandan Kushniruk scored an extra-attacker goal. Already with a man advantage, a delayed penalty was upcoming to UAH and the Tigers kept throwing the puck on the UAH goal looking for a whistle. Charger goaltender Marc Narduzzi was unable to corral the puck though and after a few shots, Jubinville found Kushniruk with a wide open net for his second goal of the season. Powe also had a helper on the goal.
Princeton capped its scoring with 48 seconds left in the thirds period. Senior Max Cousins started the play by passing the puck to freshman Mark Magnowski in the neutral zone. Magnowski gave the puck to Powe who skated into the zone and fed Magnowski in the crease where he deflected in his third goal of the season.
Princeton opened the scoring just 20 seconds into the game when sophomore Brett Wilson knocked in the rebound of a Cousins point shot. Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller, who started the play, also assisted on the goal. UAH evened the score at 11:04 of the first period on Josh Murray's power-play goal.
The Chargers scored the only goal of the third period when Mike Salekin scored on a one-time. The goal came moments after Princeton freshman goaltender stopped Tom Train on a penalty shot to keep the score at 4-1. Kalemba finished the night with 20 saves for the win.
Princeton is now 3-6-2 overall and extended its unbeaten streak to three games. The Tigers complete their two-game set in the Rocket City tomorrow night at 7 p.m. central time.
