Schmidt Scores In Overtime, Gives Field Hockey 2-1 Win Over Penn
November 03, 2006 | Field Hockey
After Penn made it exciting with an unexpected goal just seconds before the clock hit zero, the Princeton field hockey team ended its 2006 regular season with some excitement of its own on Senior Night.
Junior Paige Schmidt controlled the ball outside the penalty circle and then sent a backhand lift into the net with two minutes left in sudden victory overtime, giving the Tigers a 2-1 victory over the Quakers that concluded yet another undefeated Ivy League season for Princeton.
Princeton (11-6, 7-0 Ivy) has now finished the Ivy League season a perfect 7-0 eight times in the 10 seasons the league has featured eight teams. Penn (9-8, 4-3 Ivy) certainly didn't make it easy.
The Quakers trailed 1-0 in the final seconds of regulation before stunning the crowd and the Tigers with the game-tying goal. Nicole Levi sent a pass from the right side into the penalty circle, where Nicole Black scored into the right-hand corner of the net with just 6.8 seconds left in the second half.
Both teams had early chances in the overtime, including one from Schmidt four minutes in, before the Tiger junior scored her fifth goal of the season to send the Tigers into the NCAA tournament on a four-game winning streak.
After a scoreless first half, the Tigers pressured Penn goalie Liz Schlossberg throughout the second half before taking the lead with just less than 13 minutes on the clock. After a penalty corner situation, Sarah Reinprecht found Holly McGarvie with a nice pass from the top of the circle, and McGarvie then drilled her ninth goal of the year into the net.
Schlossberg had eight saves for Penn, which was outshot 13-9 for the game.
Princeton goalie Allison Nemeth, one of three seniors honored before the game, had three saves, including a sprawling stop on a Nina Ferrier shot in the first half and another stop on Margaretha Ehret's shot early in overtime.
The Tigers will play in their 12th NCAA tournament beginning next Saturday. Princeton will find out its first-round opponent and site on Tues., Nov. 7, at 7 p.m., when NCAA tournament selections are announced in a selection show televised by College Sports Television (CSTV).
