Thomas Leads Women's Soccer to Win over Penn in Season Finale, 2-0
November 04, 2006 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Another season, another season-ending winning streak.
Thanks to a pair of goals from freshman Lauren Thomas, the Princeton women's soccer team ended the 2006 campaign on a four-game winning streak Saturday at Lourie-Love Field with a 2-0 win over Penn. Princeton shut out its opponents for the last 393:13 of the season a year after winning its last five to take the chase for an NCAA tournament bid to the final day.
The win lifted Princeton's final record to 8-7-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the Ivy League after starting 0-4 among the Ancient Eight. It is the 10th straight winning season for the Tigers and the 11th in the 12-season tenure of head coach Julie Shackford.
Thomas scored her first-career goal 38:20 into the game, dribbling right inside the 18-yard box around Penn defenders and firing past Quaker keeper Sara Rose. On her second goal, almost 14 minutes into the second half, Thomas had a breakaway and was tripped up inside the box by Rose, who received a yellow card. Thomas received only a free kick, but curved it around the Quaker wall and found the upper-left corner to double the lead.
The teams finished even with 10 shots, while Princeton keeper Maren Dale had five saves to two for Rose.
The game took place hours after junior Diana Matheson, Princeton's leading scorer, finished her Peace Queen Cup in Seoul, South Korea, by playing all 90 minutes with Team Canada in a 1-0 loss to Team USA.
Saturday's game was also the last for the senior trio of Meghan Farrell, Amanda Ferranti and Christina Costantino, who saw a 2003 Ivy League title and a 2004 NCAA College Cup semifinal run during their careers at Old Nassau.
