Women's Squash Looks To Jump Top Trio During Howe Cup Championships
February 24, 2006 | Women's Squash
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Princeton women's squash team has made its way to Cambridge, Mass., for this weekend's Howe Cup team championships, which begin Friday. Princeton is the fourth seed and will open the weekend tournament at 12:30 against fifth-seeded Penn; the Tigers earned a hard-fought 6-3 victory over the Quakers in Philadelphia during the regular season.
A win on Friday would likely send Princeton into a showdown with top-seeded Trinity, which defeated the Tigers 7-2 last Sunday. Projected a No. 2 seed earlier this week, Trinity claimed the top seed Wednesday night when Harvard surprised Yale to win the Ivy League title. Those two teams will likely have a rematch during Saturday's other semifinal.
The Tigers' lineup will look like this:
1) Claire Rein-Weston
2) Casey Riley
3) Ali Pearson
4) Gen Lessard
5) Lena Neufeld
6) Marilla Hiltz
7) Margaret Kent
8) Carly Grabowski
9) Christina Fast
The strength of that lineup comes at the bottom, where Grabowski and Fast have been playing terrific squash recently and have yet to lose this season. Grabowski was undefeated in each of her first two regular seasons, and has consistently proven to be one of Ramsay's toughest match players.
Wins at the top and middle of the lineup are crucial to Princeton this week. They came in the 6-3 win over Penn, including a comeback win for Rein-Weston over current Penn No. 1 Alisha Turner. Gen Lessard also earned a win at No. 4, but she will match up with a new opponent against Penn. Tara Chawla, who topped Kent 3-0 at No. 5, has moved up to No. 4 in what could be a crucial late match for both teams.
