PHILADELPHIA - Senior Jacqueline Leahy claimed a bronze medal in the foil competition as the Princeton women's fencing team took fourth in the three-weapon standings. Following Saturday's men's competition, the two Tiger squads combined for a fourth-place finish over the two days at Penn's Weightman Hall.
Leahy vanquished her first opponent Meaghan O'Malley from Boston College, 15-5. She followed it up with a 15-3 win over Columbia's Kathleen Reckling to advance to the semifinals. But Leahy, who is 27-0 in dual matches this year, was edged by Harvard's Emily Cross, 15-13. While Cross went on to claim gold, Leahy returned to form and dispatched Penn's Zoya Abdikulova, 15-5.
By touches, Leahy finished fourth in the "A" foil flight. Sara Jew-Lim was third in the "B" flight and Peri Rosenstein took 12th in flight "C." As a team, Princeton finished fourth in the weapon.
Princeton's top team finish in the epee was fueled by three top-four finishes across the three flights. Kira Hohensee finished in first place in the "B" flight, while Erin McGarry was fourth in flight "A" and Jasjit Bhinder was third in flight "C." In the epee tournament, Bhinder finished fourth.
In the saber, Elan DiMaio finished seventh in the "A" flight, followed by Cara DiGirolamo's eighth-place finish in flight "B" and Caroline Block's fifth-place finish in flight "C." Princeton took sixth as a team in the saber. Princeton's top competitors overall travel to Durham, N.C. for the NCAA Regional on Saturday, Mar. 4. The Tiger participants in that competition will be announced this week.
