CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - One day after improving on its regular season showing in a semifinal loss to Trinity, the Princeton women's squash team achieved that same feat Sunday in the Howe Cup consolation match against Trinity. Unfortunately it would not be enough to give Princeton the win, as the Tigers claimed fourth following a 6-3 loss to Harvard.
Harvard led 2-1 after the first session of matches, which included a five-game thriller for Harvard's Jen Blumberg over Gen Lessard at No. 3. The Princeton junior won the second and third games by matching 9-7 scores, but Blumberg bounced back with 9-2 wins in the fourth and fifth games to take the match.
Princeton evened the match at 3-3 during the next session, winning at No. 5 and No. 8. Brady completed a perfect weekend with a 9-2, 9-6, 9-0 win at No. 8, and Hiltz earned a tough 8-10 9-5 9-5 9-0 win at No. 5 over Audrey Duboc. Ali Pearson fell at No. 2 to Kyla Grigg in three games.
"Marilla played a great match for us," head coach Gail Ramsay said. "It was a good win over a Top-15 player in the country. It was the best I've seen her play since she's been here."
Harvard swept the final session, winning 3-0 matches at No. 1 and No. 4 and a tough four-game win at No. 7. Playing without its ill No. 1 player, Claire Rein-Weston, Princeton moved Casey Riley to the top spot, and Riley fell to Lily Lorentzen 9-2, 9-5, 9-2. Lena Neufeld fell at No. 4, 9-2 9-6 9-4, and the formerly undefeated Carly Grabowski dropped a tough 10-8 9-3 5-9 10-8 match at No. 7. Both the Princeton men and women will compete at the individual squash championships next weekend.
