UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State's tight win at No. 2 doubles proved to be the difference Sunday as the Nittany Lions defeated the Princeton women's tennis team, 4-3, in a match played indoors at the PSU Tennis Center.
The Tigers nearly came from well behind to win the doubles point, with the No. 1 team of Darcy Robertson and Joanna Roth winning five straight games to take that match 9-7, but Penn State's Jenny Shular and Andrea Niculescu staved off several break points against Jessica Siebel and Laura Trimble at 6-6 before winning that match 8-6.
Princeton (4-3) would fall behind 3-0 overall before making a charge. At No. 6 singles, Kelly Stewart defeated Dorothy Dohanics 7-5 and 6-4, and Siebel then came back from a set down to win at No. 2 over Niculescu to make it 3-2.
Trimble then played a tight first set against Shular at No. 5, but fell 6-4 and 6-3 as the Nittany Lions clinched the match. Robertson got a win at No. 1 for Princeton, defeating Sasha Abraham 6-4 and 6-4.
The Tigers play at Maryland next Sunday morning.
