Princeton Travels To Take On Defending NCAA Champion Johns Hopkins

After an uncharacteristic year away from the NCAA tournament, the Princeton men's lacrosse team opened this season with a 16-6 win over Canisius last week. With the first win tucked away, the Tigers face a much different challenge this weekend, as they head to Homewood Field in Baltimore to take on the defending NCAA champion Johns Hopkins Blue Jays. The game Saturday (2) can be seen on ESPNU and heard on WHWH AM 1350.

Ancient history - Princeton and Johns Hopkins first played men's lacrosse on May 17, 1890, when Princeton defeated the Blue Jays 3-2. Princeton lost to Lehigh one week later and then suspended the sport due to "concerns of losing to schools that could not field proper football teams." Princeton played one game in 1891 and one game in 1893 and then did not play against until 1921.
Back in the day - Princeton head coach Bill Tierney (as an assistant coach) and Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala (as a defenseman) helped Johns Hopkins to the 1987 NCAA championship.
More back in the day - Princeton head coach Bill Tierney and Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala have both won two NCAA championships with the Blue Jays. Tierney was an assistant coach with the 1985 and 1987 Blue Jay teams, while Pietramala was a defenseman in 1987 and head coach in 2006.
Welcome home - Princeton assistant coach Greg Raymond was a longstick midfielder on last year's Johns Hopkins NCAA championship team.

Gaudy Gaudio - Mike Gaudio has scored at least one goal in 12 straight games. Ready when the bell rings - Scott Sowanick had four points in each of his last two season openers: a career-high four goals against Johns Hopkins in 2005; two goals and two assists last week against Canisius.
Get to the point - Peter Trombino has started every game and scored at least one point in every game of his career. The only Princeton player ever to do so for four full seasons is Kevin Lowe '94.
All alone - Peter Trombino is the only player in Princeton lacrosse history with at least 20 goals and at least 10 assists as both a freshman and sophomore.
No place like Homewood - Scott Sowanick (two goals in 2004) and Peter Trombino (one goal, one assist in 2004) are the only two Princeton players who have career points at Homewood Field.
Net results - Alex Hewit started and played 45 minutes against Canisius, allowing three goals while making three saves. Hewit started three games a freshman a year ago.
Welcome to the Jungers - Zachary Jungers will be starting on close defense this year after being the top longstick midfielder most of the last two years. Jungers did start three games at close defense in 2004 when Tim Sullivan was injured.
Long and short of it - Princeton tri-captain Ryan Schoenig started on close defense and also played shortstick defensive midfield in Princeton's win over Canisius last week.
Hot Coco - Dan Cocoziello became the first defenseman ever to be named Ivy League Rookie of the Year when he won the honor a year ago. Cocoziello was the second straight Princeton player to win the award, after Peter Trombino in 2004.
Pomp and circumstance - Princeton graduated three starters from last year's team: A Jason Doneger, whose 107 career goals rank seventh all-time at Princeton, and D Tim Sullivan and D Oliver Barry, who started every game together last year.
Working overtime - Peter Trombino has one career goal (against Maryland in the 2004 NCAA quarterfinals) and one career assist (against Penn last season) in overtime games; no other current Princeton player has a career point in overtime.
Bling, bling - Princeton's four coaches have combined for 21 NCAA championship rings. Bill Tierney has six as Princeton head coach and two as an assistant coach at Johns Hopkins; David Metzbower and Bryce Chase have six each at Princeton; Greg Raymond has one as a player from Johns Hopkins a year ago.
