PRINCETON - The Princeton baseball team continues its early-season stretch of games south of Princeton with a three-game series at Richmond this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, and a single game on Sunday. Princeton opened the 2006 season last weekend, going 1-3 at The Citadel.
Princeton began the four-game set in Charleston with three losses, but closed the trip with a 3-2 win in the finale. Sophomore reliever Reid Peyton earned the win in the game, while junior Aaron Prince and freshman Adrian Turnham each provided two hits. Prince also scored two runs, while sophomore Steven Miller notched the save.
Through the opening weekend, Prince sits atop the Princeton batting charts at .438 with seven hits in 16 at-bats. Senior Zach Wendkos, hitting .333, is the only other Tiger above .300 to have at least 2.2 at-bats per games played, the NCAA stat minimum.
Although he did not receive a decision, sophomore Christian Staehely's one earned run on five hits in five innings was the best outing for a Princeton starter last weekend. The only Tiger pitcher to go a full five innings, he has a 1.80 ERA. Peyton, who pitched two scoreless innings is the only Tiger pitcher with a lower ERA. Miller and fellow reliever Michael Zaret each allowed an earned run in three innings. Richmond enters the weekend with a 3-9 record and as dropped its last two, a 7-5 game to Virginia Tech on Monday and a 7-5 loss to Yale on Sunday. Richmond took the first two games of the series with Yale, and also has a win against Delaware. Richmond began the season with a 6-0 loss at The Citadel, Princeton week one opponent.
Princeton and Richmond have played in two of the last three seasons with Richmond winning all six meetings. Princeton opened the 20036 season with four losses at Richmond, and dropped two games at Richmond at the onset of the 2005 season.
Gametracker will be available for all three games. The first game of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m., when senior Erik Stiller takes the mound for Princeton. Junior Gavin Fabian will get the ball for the second game of the doubleheader and sophomore Christian Staehely will start the rubber game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
