ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Kent DeMond will take his final shot at a second All-America honor later this month, as he won the 2006 NCAA Zone 'A' platform competition and also qualified in the three-meter competition. Joining DeMond at NCAAs will be freshman Peggy Kearns, who also won the Zone 'A' platform competition.
A 2005 All-American, DeMond topped sophomore teammate Stuart Malcolm during Sunday's platform competition. DeMond, who trailed Malcolm after one session, won with 683.95 points. Malcolm placed second overall with 640.50, well ahead of third-place finisher Brian Lawler of Boston University.
Kearns won the platform competition for the women the same day, again beating a teammate for a spot in the NCAAs. Kearns scored 521.35, comfortable ahead of teammate Michelle Demond's second-place total of 429.75.
DeMond had already qualified for the three-meter competition at NCAAs on Friday by placing second overall. His score of 652.20 was good enough for second overall and only trailed that of Pittsburgh's Jeremy Stultz (676.60).
In the women's three-meter finals on Saturday, Charlotte Jones placed fourth overall with 513.95 points.
