SACRAMENTO, Calif. - With 10 strikeouts and another strong performance on Sunday, senior righthander Erin Snyder became Princeton's career strikeout leader, breaking the record set in 1997 by her head coach, Maureen Barron. Snyder has now fanned an even 600 batters in her career. She also moved to 2-1 on the season and extended Princeton's (6-3) winning streak to five with a 10-0, five-inning run-rule victory over Nevada (11-17) to close the Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif.
Snyder allowed just two hits with no walks in a complete-game shutout as sophomore Beth Dalmut notched a career-high four RBI in a 2 for 2 day at the plate. Other than the pair of singles, only a hit batsman reached base as no Nevada runner got past second. For the Tigers, freshman Jackie Araneo was also 2 for 2 with a pair of RBI, and junior Stephanie Steel batted three runs in.
Snyder led off the second inning with a single and two batters later, Araneo singled to put runners on first and second with one out. With both moved into scoring position as freshman Samantha O'Hara reached on a fielding error at second base, Dalmut knocked both home with a base hit and Princeton claimed a 2-0 lead. Dalmut notched her third RBI of the game in the fourth inning. Calli Jo Varner doubled to start the frame and after being subbed out for pinch runner Brianna Moreno and sacrificed to third, Dalmut lined a single through the left side for a 3-0 Princeton advantage.
Varner recieved a rare intentional pass to load the bases with one out in the fifth. It turned out not to matter from Nevada's perspective as the next batter, Araneo, snuck a two-RBI single under the glove of Wolf Pack first baseman Ashley Nichelman to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead. A walk to O'Hara loaded the bases once again, still with one out, and Dalmut walked to force home a run for her fourth run batted in. Senior Cristina Cobb-Adams followed with a single that scored another run and Princeton was ahead 7-0, still with the bases loaded and one out. Steel cleared the bases with a double to invoke the run rule and put Princeton up 10-0, but was tagged out trying to stretch a triple. The Tigers scored seven runs in the frame.
Nevada pitcher Tiffany Hoeft (2-3) left after facing two batters in the fifth, allowing three runs, all earned, with seven hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Candice Rainwater relieved and earned five runs in an inning with three hits, three walks and a strikeout.
The Tigers ended the event as one of five teams to finish 4-0 at the 16-team Capital Classic, including California, Sacramento State, Colorado State and Wisconsin. Princeton continues its spring trip with a twinbill at St. Mary's in Moraga, Calif. on Tuesday after an off day tomorrow.
