GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Aaron Prince scored twice and senior Zach Wendkos brought him home both times, but a pair of runs for UNC Greenwboro in the sixth inning lifted the Spartans to a 3-2 win against the Princeton baseball team on Tuesday night under a steady mist as the UNCG Baseball Stadium. Princeton jumped to leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the game, before UNCG came back for the win.
The two teams traded runs in the first inning. In the top of the first, Princeton used two singles and took advantage of a Spartan error to go up 1-0. Princeton hit a one-out infield single and advanced to second on a groundout. An error pushed Prince to third and he scored when Wendkos singled to left field on a 3-2 pitch. UNCG bounced back with a run on no hits. Greg Feltes drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a sac bunt. A groundout pushed him to third and he scored on a wild pitch.
Princeton regained the lead with a run in the third inning. Singles by Princeton, senior Andrew Salini and junior Sal Iacono loaded the bases with no outs, and Prince scored when Wendkos drew a walk. UNCG lifted its starter, Greg Martin, but reliever Patrick Currin was able to get out of the inning without any more runs being scored with an infield liner and a double play.
Currin held the Tigers at bay over the middle five innings, keeping Princeton hitless as he picked up the win. Clinton McKinney earned a save for UNCG.
The Spartans came back to take the lead in the sixth inning with two runs. With one out, Guy Welsh singled and then moved to second on a fielder's choice by Logan Smith, who was also safe on the play. Sean Snell walked to load the bases and the first run scored on Wes McCall's infield single. The next run scored when Brandon Harvey hit a sac fly to center. Sophomore Christian Staehely pitched six innings and allowed three runs on four hits as he took the loss. Freshman Brad Gemberling pitched two innings and allowed one hit.
The loss drops Princeton to 3-8 on the season and Princeton has now dropped five-straight games. Princeton will look to snap that skid when it meets UNC Greensboro again on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
