PRINCETON - The Princeton baseball team plays the final three games of its 2006 southern swing this weekend at Navy before returning home for its schedule of Ivy League and midweek non-conference games. Princeton and Navy first played in 1906 and played each other regularly over the next 86 seasons but will meet for the first time since 1992 this weekend.
The teams play at 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon and 12 noon on Saturday and Sunday. Livestats for all three games are available through Gametracker and links can be found on the baseball schedule page of GoPrincetonTigers.com.
Princeton enters the weekend 3-9 overall after six-consecutive losses. The skid began two weekends ago at Richmond and includes three losses at Western Carolina and two during the week at UNC Greensboro. A game on Monday night at Davidson was due to inclement weather.
The games will also represent the final time this season that Princeton will travel south for a game. Princeton's remaining schedule is comprised of its seven Ivy League opponents and five non-conference opponents from either New Jersey or New York. Penn, the southernmost school in the Ivy League, travels to Princeton for all four games between the schools.
Navy enters the weekend 16-7-1 overall and lost its most-recent game, falling 11-7 to Georgetown on Wednesday. Last weekend Navy played three one-run games with Monmouth and won two of the three. At this point of the season, Princeton and Navy have not shared any common opponents.
Princeton and Navy met for the first time in 1906 as Princeton pulled off a 3-1 win in Annapolis. The teams have met several times since and were both members of the same league, the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League, as late as 1992, when the eight Ivy schools began play under Ivy banner, and Army and Navy joined the Patriot League. The last time the two teams played came in 1992, when the two split a doubleheader in Annapolis. Princeton swept the Midshipmen a season earlier at home. The teams have not met since Navy joined the Patriot League. Offensively, Princeton has been getting consistent hitting from junior Aaron Prince, who is hitting .400 on the season and has hit safely in all 12 games played this season. Senior Zach Wendkos has four home runs this season in 12 games, compared to the five he had in 72 games during his first three seasons at Princeton. Senior Andrew Salini's six home runs in 11 games is a career high. He had five last season.
On the mound, sophomore Christian Staehely and junior Eric Walz each have ERAs of 2.57, the lowest of the Tiger starters. Junior Michael Zaret has the lowest ERA of the Tiger staff that has appeared in at least two games. His ERA is 1.59.
