ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Princeton baseball team fell behind 1-0 in the opening inning on Friday afternoon at Navy, but came came back to tie the game with a run in the top of the ninth inning, before Navy put together two hits and a sac bunt in the bottom of the 10th to pull off a 2-1 win. Senior Andrew Salini had three hits in the game and scored Princeton's lone run after doubling to lead off the ninth.
Princeton put two runners on in the opening inning, but it was Navy that plated the first run in the bottom half of that inning. With two outs, Thomas Hamilton had an infield single and went to second on Mitch Harris' single through the left side. Hamilton scored when D.J. Faldowski singled to center field.
For the next seven innings the game settled into a pitcher's duel between Navy's Mark McCoy and Princeton senior Erik Stiller. Neither pitcher factored in the decision, but both kept things in control when on the mound. Stiller pitched seven innings and allowed a single run on five hits, while striking out eight. McCoy pitched eight and two-thirds and surrendered a run on six hits.
Princeton, unable to score over the first eight innings, put it run on the board in the top of the ninth to even the score at 1-1. Salini led off the inning with a double and advanced to thrid on senior Zach Wendkos' groundout. Salini then scored when junior Sal Iacono doubled to left field. Princeton was unable to advance Iacono however, as Navy closer Ryan Hefner came on to close out the inning. Navy put two on in the bottom of the ninth, but a fly out ended the attempted rally and sent the game to extra innings.
Princeton went out in order in the 10th, but once again Navy pieced together a couple of hits and this time was able to push across a run. After a Renaldo Hollins single, he moved to second on a sac bunt. A groundout pushed him to third and he scored when Hamilton singled through the right side.
Hefner picked up the win for Navy, while sophomore Steven Miller took the loss for Princeton.
The loss dropped Princeton to 3-10 on the season. The Tigers look to get back in the win column tomorrow afternoon when the teams meet at 12 noon.
