PALO ALTO, Calif. - Erin Snyder pitched well, but Missy Penna threw a little bit better. Snyder (4-3), the Princeton senior righthander, held No. 5 Stanford (24-4) without a run for the first four innings before the Cardinal converted in the fifth. Her counterpart Penna (14-2) allowed just two hits, leaving both baserunners at first. In its bid to upset a top-five Stanford team for the second straight year, the Princeton softball team (9-7) fell short, 1-0.
Stanford stranded a runner in scoring position in three of the first four innings and was close to doing so again in the fifth. With Penna on second, Catalina Morris lined a single through the right side on a two-out, 2-1 pitch and Penna beat the throw home from right field for the Cardinal's run.
The Tigers fell in order until rookie Brianna Moreno put down a bunt single with two outs in the third inning. Princeton's next hit came in the fifth inning, when senior Cristina Cobb Adams lined a base hit into right field, again with two out.
Snyder ended up allowing seven hits, walking and striking out six. Penna also didn't walk a batter, fanning only two, benefitting from eight outs on fly balls and 11 via grounders.
Princeton will play Santa Clara at approximately 8 p.m. PT tonight in a game that was originally scheduled to start at 9 a.m. PT but was moved to the end of the schedule because of wet field conditions. In another schedule change, the Tigers will play their final game of the spring trip Sunday at 11 a.m. PT against Illinois instead of 9 a.m. Friday, Princeton knocked off the Illini 2-0 and, after last weekend's victory over Minnesota, defeated two Big Ten teams in the same year for the first time.
