Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel scored runs in the bottom of the first innings of both games to jump to leads and sweep both of ends of a doubleheader with the Princeton baseball team on Saturday at Riley Park. The Citadel took the opener 14-1 as senior Zach Wendkos homered for Princeton. In the second game, senior Stephen Wendell hit a two-run single, but the Bulldogs pulled off the 10-7 win.
The losses drop Princeton to 0-3 on the season while The Citadel is now 9-3.
In the opening game, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the first on a three-run homer by Zach Brown. The Bulldogs cruised from there, adding four runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and three in three in the seventh. Princeton, which was held to just three hits, put its only run on the board when Wendkos hit a solo home run in the eighth inning.
Junior Gavin Fabian started the game and took the loss. He pitched four and two-thirds innings allowing seven runs on eight hits. Sophomore Stephen Richter pitched the final three and a third and also allowed seven runs on eight hits. The Citadel's Ryan Owens got the wins as he scattered three this over eight innings.
Princeton also fell behind in the 3-0 early in the second game of the day, and found itself down 7-0 after five innings. Princeton answered back though with a four-run sixth inning to make the score 7-4. With one away, freshman Derek Beckman reached on a fielding error. After another out, junior Aaron Prince singled through the left side for senior Andrew Salini who drive in Beckman on a single to center field. Junior Sal Iacono then doubled to score Prince. That left two runners on base, and both scored when Wendell singled to center field.
Princeton chipped two more runs off the lead in the seventh to move within one run. Senior Matthew Becker and freshman Adrian Turnham started the inning with back-to-back singles. Beckman then tried to bunt the runners over, but a Bulldog error let him reach safely and allowed Turnham to score. Becker was thrown out on the play. Beckman later scored on a single by Prince.
Princeton moved within a run an inning later. After Iacono singled to lead off the inning, he scored when freshman Andrew Doupe tripled. That however was as close as Princeton would get as the Bulldogs sealed the win with a pair in the bottom of the eighth.
Junior Eric Walz took the loss as he allowed three runs in four innings on six hits. Freshman Brad Gemberling allowed seven runs, four earned, in four innings. Matt Crim got the win for The Citadel.
The two teams close out their four-game series tomorrow afternoon.
