CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Just after dropping Saturday's opener 1-0 to Canisius, the Princeton softball team (1-3) fell in another one-run game, 2-1 to Memphis (8-5) in eight innings. All four of Princeton's games on the young season have been decided by a single run and two have gone to extra frames. A day after striking out 15 North Carolina batters in nine innings, Erin Snyder fanned 14 Memphis hitters despite seeing her record fall to 1-1.
The 29 strikeouts in two days gives Snyder 590 for her career, just six shy of the record held by her head coach Maureen (Davies) Barron at 596.
After Princeton stranded Cristina Cobb-Adams at third with two outs in the bottom of the first, Memphis took a 1-0 lead in its next at-bat on a home run by Bridgette McNulty. Princeton took advantage of a throwing error by Memphis second baseman Tori Gross in the fifth to tie the game. With Kathryn Welch on second and two out, Cobb-Adams singled and Welch took the extra base on the miscue.
For the second time in as many days, Princeton's second contest of the day went into extra innings, forcing use of the international tiebreaker rule in which a runner is placed on second base to start the inning. Memphis was able to convert its runner in the eighth, while Princeton could not. In the top of the eighth, Memphis sacrificed its runner to third and used its next out to score the runner on a sacrifice fly. In the Princeton half of the inning, Cobb-Adams' attempt to move the runner to third with a bunt was snuffed out and the next two Tigers were unable to reach base, ending the contest. Snyder was charged with six hits and no walks in eight innings, earning only one of the Memphis runs since the second run was aboard due to the tiebreaker rule. Cobb-Adams had two of Princeton's three hits, all given up by Memphis starter Nicki Johnson. Going the distance, Johnson struck out four and walked two.
Princeton completes the UNC Tar Heel Invitational on Sunday with a 10 a.m. first pitch against North Dakota State.
