Baseball Rallies For First Win of 2006

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Princeton baseball team came from behind to defeat The Citadel 3-2 on Sunday afternoon to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Bulldogs. Princeton fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, but evened the score with two runs in sixth and went ahead with a run in the eighth. Sophomore Reid Peyton picked up the win on the mound.
The win moves Princeton to 1-3 and is its first of the 2006 season. The Citadel is now 9-4 overall after taking three-of-four from Princeton.
Conrad Kellehan began the inning with a walk and then stole second. He went to third on a single by Matt Covington and the bases were loaded when Chris Swauger walked. Two of the runner then scored on an error in the field when the following batter, Matt Matulia, reached on an error.
From that point each starting pitcher dug in and the score remained unchanged through the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, Princeton put a pair of runs on the board to even the score at 2-2. Freshman Dan Degeorge hit an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch. He then scored when junior Aaron Prince singled through the left side. Princeton moved to second on a groundout and went to third on a passed ball, before scoring on junior Sal Iacono's single up the middle.
After evening the score, sophomore starting pitcher Christian Staehely left the game and Peyton entered in relief. Staehely pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out five. Peyton came on for the sixth and pitched two hitless innings. Princeton gave Peyton a run in the top of the eighth inning to go ahead 3-2. With one out, Prince legged out an infield single. Senior Andrew Salini walked to push Prince over to second and he scored from second on a wild pitch during senior Zach Wendkos' at bat.
The run stood up as sophomore Steven Miller came on for a six-out save. He allowed one hit over the final two innings to notch his first save of the season and seal the win for Peyton and the Tigers. Bulldog reliever Brett Bull took the loss in relief.
Princeton returns to action next Saturday with a doubleheader at Richmond. The games will begin at 1 p.m.
