PRINCETON - Princeton junior right-handed pitcher Eric Walz was named the Ivy League Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday following the 10 scoreless innings he pitched last Saturday at Columbia. Walz was one of three Princeton starters to blank Columbia over the weekend. He held the Lions to five hits through 10 innings in the second game on Saturday.
Walz was one of three Princeton starting pitchers to not allow a run during their appearances at Columbia as seven Princeton hurlers combined to allow just two earned runs over 34 innings of work. Walz's start was a classic pitcher's duel as he and Columbia's Billy Purdy traded goose eggs into extra innings. He had only given up three hits through nine innings, and three times erased his base runners by getting double plays. He struck out five and walked one to earn the win.
It is the first Pitcher of the Week Award for Walz, who was a Rookie of the Week winner during his freshman season. He was named to the Ivy League Honor Roll earlier this season after he combined in shutting out Navy.
Sophomore outfielder Spencer Lucian was also named the weekly honor roll for his weekend at Columbia. He batted .462 over the weekend as Princeton took four-straight games from Columbia. He had seven hits in 13 at bats over the weekend and was one of two Tigers to have three extra-base hits, and the only Tiger to have a double, triple and home run. His 12 total bases led the team, as did his .923 weekend slugging percentage. In Game 2 on Saturday, Lucian went 2 for 4 including an opposite field home run with one out in the 11th inning to break a scoreless tie.
