PRINCETON - The Princeton baseball team fell behind in the early innings in both games against Dartmouth as the Big Green swept the Tigers in Ivy League baseball action at Clarke Field. Dartmouth took Game 1 by a 7-6 score and won the second game 10-8. Princeton out hit Dartmouth 27-22 on the afternoon but the Big Green did a better job of plating its runners as it pulled off the sweep.
Sophomore Micah Kaplan and senior Stephen Wendell each had four hits on the day for Princeton, while senior Andrew Salini and Kaplan each plated three runs in the doubleheader.
Dartmouth jumped to a 4-0 lead right out of the gates in the first inning of the first game. With one out, Tommy Myette doubled to left center and scored on Will Bashelor's single to right field. Bashelor scored a batter later when Damon Wright singled. A groundout moved Wright to third and he scored on Michael Pagliarulo's singled to center.
Princeton chipped a run off the lead in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Dan Degeorge hit a leadoff double to the corner in right field, one of three hits in the game for him. He went to third on a fly ball and scored on a RBI-groundout by senior Andrew Salini. Dartmouth added single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to move out to a 7-1 lead. Bashelor had an RBI-single in the second, Kyle Evans hit an RBI-single in the third and Wright tripled home a run in the fourth.
Princeton started to climb back in the fourth inning as it scored four times to move within two runs. Junior Sal Iacono hit a leadoff single and scored when sophomore Micah Kaplan doubled over the head of the Dartmouth centerfielder. Kaplan went to third on a fly ball and scored when freshman Andrew Doupe singled up the middle. That brought up sophomore Spencer Lucian, who scored Doupe with his first collegiate home run over the wall in left center field.
Princeton moved within a single run in the sixth inning when DeGeorge hit a solo home run to left field. It was also his first collegiate homer. Princeton threatened in the seventh inning as Iacono drew a leadoff walk. Freshman Derek Beckman entered as a pinch runner. He stole second and went to third on a fly ball, but Dartmouth closer Kyle Zeis was able to get a strikeout to end the game.
Zeis pitched three innings to notch the save. Russell Young pitched four innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits for the win. Junior Eric Walz took the loss after allowing seven runs in seven innings.
In Game 2, Dartmouth went ahead 4-0 with two runs in the second and third innings. Princeton responded with five runs in the Tiger third inning to take its first lead of the day 5-4. With one out, junior Aaron Prince tripled to center field and, after a Salini walk, scored on a Wendkos' single through the left side. Another single by junior Sal Iacono loaded the bases, and they were cleared when Kaplan singled through the left side. Kaplan advanced to third on the throw and an error and scored when freshman Adrian Turnham hit a sac fly.
Dartmouth reclaimed the lead with two runs in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI-double by Andrew Nacario and a Jason McManis run-scoring single. Princeton tied the game up in the sixth inning with a single run as a Salini single scored senior Matthew Becker.
Dartmouth went ahead for good in the seventh with three runs as the Big Green used three walks and a hit batter to take a 7-6 lead. Myette then singled to score two more runs. Dartmouth added another run in the eighth to make the score 10-6.
Princeton rallied to score two in the bottom of the eighth as back-to-back one-out walks resulted in runs. Beckman and Prince drew the walks. Beckman scored on a Salini single and Prince crossed home plate in a Wendkos single.
Chase Carpenter earned the win for Dartmouth to climb to 1-2. He gave up seven runs on 12 hits in seven and a third. Sophomore Steven Miller took the loss in relief for Princeton. He allowed four runs on three hits.
