PRINCETON - The Princeton baseball team brings a season-long six-game win streak into a four-game series with Penn this weekend at Clarke Field. Princeton climbed to the top of the Gehrig Division standings by taking four from Columbia last weekend and will continue its divisional schedule with Penn.
Princeton returns to Clarke Field this weekend after 10-straight games away from home. In fact, Princeton has only played four of its 30 games on its home field this season, but closes out the regular season with six of its final 10 games at home. Princeton is currently 0-4 at home this season as Harvard and Dartmouth each took two from the Tigers the first weekend of April.
The Tigers enter the weekend following an 8-6 midweek win at Seton Hall. The Tigers took advantage of three Pirate errors and three timely hits to take a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning, then held Seton Hall at bay for the 8-6 final score. Freshman Derek Beckman and sophomore Micah Kaplan each had two hits and drove in two runs in the win, while freshman Brad Gemberling pitched six strong innings for his first collegiate win.
Last weekend Princeton moved atop the Gehrig Division standings by sweeping Columbia on the road. Princeton outscored the Lions 33-5 in those four games and allowed just two earned runs in 34 innings of work. The performance was just what Princeton needed to climb back into contention in the Gehrig Division standings after the whole division struggled against the Rolfe Division. Princeton is now 5-7 in the league and holds a one-game lead on 4-8 Cornell. Penn (5-11) and Columbia (4-12) are two and three games back, respectively.
Last season Penn and Princeton each swept a day's doubleheader when the teams met in Philadelphia. The Quakers won both games on Saturday by scores of 3-1 and 5-4. Princeton came back to take two the next day, rallying for a 6-5 win with two outs in the top of the seventh of Game 1 and winning 15-9 in the nightcap. Penn is 10-25 overall and 5-11 in Ivy play. The Quakers have dropped five of six games, including three of four to Cornell last weekend and a game on Tuesday against Rider.
