PRINCETON - One month ago, the men's lightweight crew dropped its season opener and impressed new coach Greg Hughes with how it bounced back the next week with a win over Georgetown. The young men's lights did it again, sweeping the Wood-Hammond races one week after a tight loss to Cornell.
On the friendly waters of Lake Carnegie, Princeton ended Penn's brief one-year reign with the Wood-Hammond Trophy by topping the Quakers by 5.5 seconds in the first varsity race. The Tigers won in 6:09.7, while Penn finished second in 6:15.2. Georgetown took third in 6:23.5.
It was the final race in a strong day overall for the men's lightweights. It began with a dominant effort from the freshmen, who cruised to victory in 6:16.4. Both Princeton's second varsity and third varsity topped the field in the second varsity race; it was the Tiger third varsity that came through quickest, winning in 6:20.6.
Princeton will head to New Haven, Conn., next weekend to compete for the Goldthwait Cup against Yale and Harvard.
