Tigers Shoot to Benefit Cancer Research
May 01, 2006 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton women's basketball team spent last Saturday benefiting the community, participating in a Shoot-a-Thon to raise money for the American Cancer Society through the Coaches vs. Cancer project as well as the annual Communiversity event.
According to head coach Richard Barron, the team made 1,000 three-pointers Saturday morning, raising nearly $3,000. The funds will benefit cancer research in memory of three members of the Princeton basketball family who died of cancer in the past year; Susan O'Brien, the mother of graduating senior Katy O'Brien, Lori Pietrzak, the mother of incoming freshman Elizabeth Pietrzak, and Toni Arcamone, the wife of Jadwin Gym employee and women's basketball supporter Gooch Arcamone.
Princeton players and manager Adi Hirshberg took pledges from friends, professors and family members per three-point shot made. Anyone interested in donating may do so by sending a check made out to the American Cancer Society addressed to Barron at P.O. Box 71, Princeton, N.J., 08544.
Following the Shoot-a-Thon, team members encouraged youngsters attending the Communiversity event to take part in basketball drills and shoot around with the team, giving the kids the opportunity to meet the Tigers in person.
On the basketball court, Princeton claimed an Ivy title in 2005-06, finishing 21-7 overall and 12-2 in Ivy play, both school records.
