Vance Named Ivy League Co-Player of the Year in Women's Lacrosse
May 16, 2006 | Women's Lacrosse
For the third straight season, Princeton has both an Ivy League Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in women's lacrosse.
Senior defender Lauren Vance was named the league's Co-Player of the Year, while freshman midfielder Holly McGarvie earned Rookie of the Year honors, in a vote of the league's eight head coaches announced Tuesday.
Vance, who earns the award along with Cornell goalie Maggie Fava, leads Princeton with 28 caused turnovers in 2006 and is one of 21 nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy honoring the national player of the year. Often matched up with the opposition's top defender, she also ranks second on the team with 38 ground balls.
The Lexington, Va., native, a four-year starter and tri-captain for the Tigers in 2006, has led a Princeton defense that has allowed less than nine goals per game this season. She also has two assists for the Tigers in 2006.
McGarvie has been one of the best all-around players in the Ivy League during her freshman season. Princeton's leader in draw controls with 43 and ground balls with 44, she also has 21 goals and six assists in 2006. McGarvie also ranks second on the team with 19 caused turnovers this season.
The Medford, N.J., native has started all 17 games and earned Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week honors April 3 after leading the Tigers to wins over Temple and Cornell the previous week.
Vance and McGarvie were two of five Princeton players overall to earn All-Ivy honors. Vance was one of four unanimous first-team All-Ivy picks, while McGarvie earned second-team honors.
Junior attacker Kathleen Miller, Princeton's leading scorer in 2006, was a unanimous first-team pick. Miller's 55 points (34 goals, 21 assists) rank second in the Ivy League, and she is fourth in the league in points per game (3.24).
Earning second-team All-Ivy honors for Princeton were sophomore midfielder Katie Lewis-Lamonica and senior defender Caitlin Abidin. Lewis-Lamonica leads the Tigers with 37 goals this season, ranking fourth in the league in goals per game, while Abidin is an All-America candidate who ranks among the team leaders with 24 ground balls and 16 draw controls.
Vance is Princeton's fourth consecutive Ivy League Player of the Year, joining Rachael Becker (2003), Theresa Sherry (2004) and Lindsey Biles (2005). McGarvie is Princeton's third straight Rookie of the Year, joining Miller in 2004 and Lewis-Lamonica in 2005.
