Baseball Drops Regular Season Finale at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh jumped ahead with five first-inning runs and never looked back as the Mountain Hawks claimed an 18-4 win against the Princeton baseball team on Sunday afternoon. Princeton had 14 hits in the game, but could only plate four runs as it dropped its final regular season game of the season. The Ivy League champion Tigers will next play at the NCAA Regionals and will find out their opponent tomorrow afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks plated five runs apiece in each of the first two innings. Princeton scored a run in the second inning before Lehigh made it 10-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Spencer Lucian doubled home the run in the second inning after senior Sal Iacono hit a leadoff single. It was one of a team-high three hits in the game for Lucian.
Lehigh used runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to pull ahead 18-1 before Princeton scored three times in its final at bat. With one out, Lucian, freshman Derek Beckman and freshman Dan Degeorge singled to load the bases. Lucian scored on a wild pitch and Beckman scored on an RBI-groundout. Senior Andrew Salini singled in the final run.
Junior Michael Zaret took the loss after allowing 10 runs in two innings. Lehigh starter Joe Matteo took the win.
Princeton is now 19-24-1 this season and will continue its season at the NCAA Regionals on Friday. Princeton will find out its opponent when the NCAA announces the tournament field tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m., on ESPN. The 16 regional sites were announced earlier today. The 16 regional sites are Alabama, Arkansas, Cal St. Fullerton, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon St., Pepperdine, Rice, Texas and Virginia.
