PRINCETON - Senior Stephen Wendell led a group of eight Princeton baseball players that received All-Ivy recognition today from the league. Wendell earned First-Team honors as a designated hitter, while juniors Aaron Prince and Sal Iacono were each named to the second-team. Princeton won the its third Ivy League Championship in a four-year span last weekend by sweeping Harvard in the best-of-three Ivy Championship Series.
Wendell has been Princeton's best hitter for average since the Tigers returned from Spring Break at the end of March. In the 27 games since, which began with a tie at Rutgers, Wendell is batting .345 with 30 hits. He split time during the season playing first base and as the designated hitter, before settling in as the team's DH during the Ivy League season. It is the first All-Ivy award for the senior.
Prince and Iacono make up half of the infield on the Ivy League's second team. Prince, Princeton's second baseman, led Princeton in hitting for much of the 2006 season and currently sits second on the team with a .336 average. Prince reached base with a hit in the first 12 games of 2006, and that coupled with a five-game hit streak at the end of 2005, give him the longest hitting streak in Princeton baseball history at 17 games.
Iacono led the Tigers in batting average during the Ivy season, hitting at a .387 clip. He also led the team with 29 hits, six doubles and a .465 on-base percentage in Ivy games. Iacono, who played at third base and catcher throughout the season, did not commit an error in 93 chances during the league season. Iacono was an honorable mention All-Ivy last year.
Five Tigers received honorable mentions in 2006, including starting pitchers, senior Erik Stiller and sophomore Christian Staehely, who each picked up a win in Princeton's sweep of Harvard for the Ivy title last weekend. Stiller, a first-team selection last year went 4-2 in Ivy games, while Staehely was 4-0 in Ivy play. Also receiving honorable mentions were senior catcher Zach Wendkos, who leads Princeton with a .338 average, 52 hits, eight home runs and 38 RBIs. He too played a big part in Princeton's Ivy sweep, going 4 for 8 on the day with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs. He was a second-team selection in 2005.
Senior Andrew Salini was an honorable mention for the third-straight season. He hit .322 for the Tigers with six home runs and 35 RBIs. He led Princeton with 34 runs scored. Lastly, freshman shortstop Dan Degeorge received an honorable mention. DeGeorge hit .264 for Princeton with 27 runs scored and 20 RBIs. He led off for the Tigers for the majority of the season and had 12 extra-base hits.
Princeton will find out its next opponent on Monday, May 29 when the NCAA announces the field for the 2006 tournament. The selection will air at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN, and the games take place beginning on Friday, June 2.
