Six Princetonians Named to U.S. Elite and Developmental Women's Lacrosse Teams
August 14, 2006 | Women's Lacrosse
Six current or former Princeton women's lacrosse players, as well as current Tiger assistant coach Michele DeJuliis, have been named to either the U.S. Women's Elite or Developmental team rosters for the 2006-07 season.
Four Princetonians made the 24-player Elite roster, chosen after a two-day tryout in Baltimore last week that included more than 130 of the nation's top players. 2003 graduate Rachael (Becker) DeCecco, 2005 graduates Lindsey Biles and Elizabeth Pillion and rising junior Katie Lewis-Lamonica '08 all earned spots on the elite team, to be coached by longtime national team goalie Sue Heether. Assistant coach DeJuliis, a former All-America at Penn State, also made the Elite roster.
Both Lauren Vance '06, the 2006 Ivy League Co-Player of the Year, and Holly McGarvie '09, the 2006 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, earned spots on the 22-player U.S. Developmental squad chosen at the same tryout. The developmental team program serves as a means by which the adult lacrosse player can gain greater exposure to international competition and have an opportunity to continue to develop her skills with the aim of becoming a member of the Elite or World Cup team and represent the U.S. at the senior international level.
"Hats off to Rachael, Lindsey, Pills, Lewey, Vance, Holly and DJ for being named to the US Elite and Development Teams," says Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "I am so proud of all that they have accomplished, both as Tigers and with the US National Teams. Together they will continue the strong legacy of Princeton greats competing at the national level, and I certainly expect that some of them will help the US win back the World Cup three years from now."
The squads were selected by the 10-person US Lacrosse Women's Division National Teams Selection Committee (NTSC), chaired by former U.S. World Cup team coach and incoming Hall of Famer Feffie Barnhill.
"We are excited that so many of our top players participated in these tryouts as we look forward to the 2009 IFWLA World Cup, which will be held in the Czech Republic," said Chip Rogers, chair of the US Lacrosse Women's Division National Teams Committee.
The U.S. Elite and Developmental teams have scheduled two weekends of competition in the upcoming months. The teams will play top college programs during the Stars and Stripes Weekend Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Northern Virginia and during the Champions Challenge Weekend Jan. 27-28, 2007, in Orlando, Fla.
