Venable and Stiller Honored With Weekly Awards
August 23, 2006 | Baseball
Will Venable and Erik Stiller, each currently playing minor league baseball, were honored on Monday as their leagues' Player and Pitcher of the Week. Venable was the Midwest League's Player of the Week, while Stiller was the New York-Penn League's Pitcher of the Week.
Venable, a left fielder with the Fort Wayne Wizards, nearly doubled his home run total last week, as he hit four homers and now has nine on the season. Last Monday, the California native went 3-for-5 with two homers and three RBIs to lead the Wizards to a 7-2 victory over Dayton. On Friday, Venable hit a grand slam and drove in five runs as Fort Wayne rolled to a 13-4 win over South Bend. He hit .464 for the week.
Stiller, a starting pitcher for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, did not earn the win against Staten Island on Friday night, but it certainly was not his fault. The 22-year-old righty allowed just one hit over six shutout innings while striking out four, but the Scrappers ended up losing the game by a score of 1-0. Opponents are batting just .191 against Stiller in the month of August.
Those two awards lifted Princeton's seasonal weekly award total to four, as four of the six Tigers in the minor leagues have a weekly honor to their credit. B.J. Szymanski was the Midwest League's Player of the Week in early May, while Ross Ohlendorf was the Southern League's Pitcher of the Week in mid-May.
Princeton's lone Major Leaguer, Chris Young, also was in on the award winning, as the San Diego Padre starter was the National League's Pitcher of the Month for June.
