William and Mary Blanks Women's Soccer, 2-0
September 17, 2006 | Women's Soccer
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- In a matchup of two superb defensive teams, William and Mary (6-1-1) needed only one clear look against the Princeton women's soccer team (2-2-1) to close the Tribe's invitational Sunday.
The Tribe, which entered the week ranked No. 18 in the adidas/NSCAA coaches' poll, never forced its keeper to make a spectacular save as the Tigers' clear shot at the net never came.
The Tigers were without 2004 All-America and two-time First-Team All-Ivy midfielder Diana Matheson, who was training with Team Canada. Matheson has three of Princeton's six goals on the year and was coming off an eight-point week worthy of Ivy Player of the Week and SoccerBuzz.com national Elite Team honors.
After seeing its first few opportunities snuffed out by the Tiger backs, the Tribe scored on its first shot on goal with 33:06 left in the half. Krissy Vornadore found Donna Mataya on a cross-box pass and Mataya powered it into the left corner just under a diving Maren Dale.
The goal stopped a scoreless streak for keeper Maren Dale of 311:42 since Boston University's second goal in the season opener and across three full games before the 12th-minute goal Sunday.
The Tigers did outshoot the Tribe 8-3 with two shots on goal, but the only attempt William and Mary put inside the goal frame was the difference.
William and Mary put the game away with 6:03 left in the second half. Emily Kittleson made a crossing pass to Kellie Jenkins on Dale's right as Jenkins fired across the goal mouth and found the opposite corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
For the game, Princeton outshot the Tribe 12-7. Dale was not credited with a save on the match as William and Mary made both of its shots on goal count. Tribe keeper Meghan Walker had three saves.
The Tigers have one day away from competition before its first game at Lourie-Love Field Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Lehigh.
