Four Second-Half Goals Lead Women's Soccer to Rout of Lehigh, 5-0
September 19, 2006 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. – Four second-half goals built on a first-half penalty kick goal by Diana Matheson as the Princeton women's soccer team (3-2-1) routed Lehigh (3-5), 5-0, Tuesday in its final match before the Ivy League opener at Yale Saturday.
It was Princeton's largest offensive output of the young season and the fourth shutout keeper Maren Dale and the Tiger defense have authored. Dale needed to make just one save as the Tigers outshot Lehigh 14-2.
Matheson's goal just past the 13-minute mark came after she was tripped up inside the 18-yard box to earn the penalty kick. She powered it in for her fourth goal of the year in just four games played after the Canadian national team member missed two games last weekend to train with her mates north of the border.
The Tigers entered the half just one goal ahead of the Mountain Hawks, though the visitors' chances were few heading into the break. Lehigh's climb got much steeper not long after the game's midpoint when Aarti Jain took a pass from Allison Williams in front of a crowded net for her first goal of the year and a 2-0 lead.
In the 65th minute, Sarah Peteraf earned her first goal of the season when Amanda Ferranti found her with a pass that Peteraf pounded in straight on for a three-goal edge.
Princeton's last two goals came after the 80-minute mark. Vicki Anagnostopoulos joined the season's-first-goal parade with her first career score with an assist going to Meghan Farrell. Just 2:04 later, Jain picked up a loose ball after Lehigh couldn't clear a corner kick and gave Princeton the final five-goal lead.
Saturday's 7 p.m. contest in New Haven, Conn., is an important one against the defending Ivy champions who advanced to the NCAA's Round of 16 last season. The Tigers return home next Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Lourie-Love Field against Loyola College.
