Yale Deals Women's Soccer 2-1 Loss in Ivy Opener
September 23, 2006 | Women's Soccer
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- After fending off near-misses by defending Ivy champion Yale in the first half, the Bulldogs broke through with two goals in the second half to hold off the Princeton women's soccer team in the Ivy opener Saturday night, 2-1.
The defeat comes almost a year to the day after the Bulldogs knocked off Princeton, also 2-1, at Lourie-Love Field on Sept. 24, 2005, helping to end Princeton's six-year streak of NCAA tournament appearances. While that, too, was a league opener, the loss held great importance more than a month later as the Bulldogs finished with 16 standings points to Princeton's 15, denying the Tigers the Ivy's automatic postseason bid.
Emma Whitfield fed Mimi Macauley for both Yale goals, first in the 49th minute for a tip-in after Princeton keeper Maren Dale dove trying to defend, and again in the 61st minute when Macauley pounded home what became the game winner.
Yale outshot the Tigers 12-10 and Bulldog keeper Susan Starr made four saves to Dale's two.
Princeton halved the lead in the 74th minute when Vicki Anagnostopoulos scored her second goal of the season in front of a crowded net off a pass from Diana Matheson, who earned her 11th point in five games played.
Before returning to Ivy play Saturday at 1 p.m. against Dartmouth to open a men's-women's doubleheader, the Tigers host Loyola (Md.) Wednesday at 7 p.m.
