Women's Soccer Rebounds with 2-1 Win over Loyola
September 27, 2006 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. -- After a difficult one-goal loss to Yale Saturday to open Ivy play against the defending league champions, the Princeton women's soccer team needed a boost before returning to Ivy games against Dartmouth this weekend. It got one as the Orange and Black broke through with two goals in the second half and held on for a 2-1 win over Loyola (Md.) at Lourie-Love Field Wednesday night.
The two teams tied 5-5 in shots through the first half, but Loyola had the more dangerous chances. On one of the Greyhounds' two corners in the opening period, the Tigers failed to clear the ball quickly, leading to a tense frenzy before finally averting danger. Carolyn Kennington, Loyola's lead striker with three of the team's four goals heading into the game, gave Princeton another heart-stopping moment with a long shot that barely missed the left post. It was Kennington's only shot on the night.
Princeton finally broke through in the 64th minute, when sophomore Aarti Jain took a pass from Vicki Anagnostopoulos toward the right side and powered a kick home from well beyond the 18-yard box for her third goal of the season. Just over six minutes later, senior Meghan Farrell ended a flurry of Princeton shots by taking a rebound off the left post and finding plenty of room in the net to double the Tiger lead.
But Princeton's two-goal cushion lasted just under seven minutes. In front of a crowded net, Loyola's Colleen Kinealy knocked in a shot with an assist going to Christina Gomez, forcing the Tigers to hold on to a one-goal edge for the last 13:40.
Princeton was up to the task, despite another white-knuckle near-miss from Courtney Arikian in the waning minutes. Arikian had three of Loyola's nine shots, tops on her team and second only to Anagnostopoulos' game-high five shots. For the game, Princeton outshot Loyola 15-9. Tiger keeper Maren Dale made two saves while Greyhound netminder Brittany Henderson had six.
The Tigers host Dartmouth as part of a doubleheader Saturday with the men's team. The women's game starts at 1 p.m. at Lourie-Love Field with the men's game following at 4 p.m.
