Men's Tennis Begins 2006 Fall Season With Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational
September 21, 2006 | Men's Tennis
Singles players and doubles teams from nine different schools will visit the Princeton campus for the annual Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational hosted by the Princeton men's tennis team at the Lenz Tennis Center Fri. Sept. 22-Sun., Sept. 24.
The tournament features "A" and "B" flights in both singles and doubles action. The singles brackets each feature 32-player draws, while the doubles brackets are 16-team draws. Results should be updated each day of the tournament on GoPrincetonTigers.com.
Princeton sophomore Peter Capkovic, who will be making his intercollegiate debut Friday, is the No. 2 seed in the "A" singles bracket behind top seed Jason Pinsky from Penn. Capkovic has earned a preseason national singles ranking of 102 heading into the fall season. Tiger senior Sratha Saengsuwarn is also seeded in the "A" bracket at No. 7.
In the "A" doubles bracket, Capkovic and sophomore Alex Krueger-Wyman are the fourth seeds and will face a team from Cornell in the first round.
Besides the Tigers, representatives from Cornell, Virginia Tech, Penn, Yale, Rutgers, Virginia, Columbia and Saint Joseph's will participate in the annual event, named in honor of former Princeton tennis great Ted Farnsworth '84.
At Princeton, Ted was a tennis sensation, rising from a freshman ranked in the 50s among the 18-and-Under's to captain of the tennis team and one of the 10 best collegiate players nationwide. Ted ranked as Princeton's top male tennis player during his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. As a junior, Ted reached the semifinals of the ITA fall All-American Tournament and won the Princeton Invitational and the Nationial Indoor Singles Championships. His senior year, Ted advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Ted entered the Navy in 1985, and, as a lieutenant senior grade, flew F-18s, the navy's top fighter bomber. He was killed tragically in 1993 when his F-18 crashed in the Nevada mountains while on a night mission.
