Welander, Tigers Complete Victories at Princeton Women's Golf Invitational
September 24, 2006 | Women's Golf
PRINCETON, N.J. -- After posting the only red round of the tournament Saturday with a 69, Princeton junior golfer Annika Welander turned in a 77 Sunday to win the Princeton Invitational at Springdale Golf Club. Every Princeton round Sunday was in the 70s, allowing the Tigers to widen their lead over Harvard and capture the team title as well.
Welander's win is the first of her career as her top finish by place over her first two years was sixth as a freshman. Her Saturday score is also the lowest of her collegiate career, breaking the 72 she carded as a freshman. It was also Amy Bond's first victory as a head coach in her first event with the program.
But Welander was far from the only Tiger with success on the weekend. All five Tigers competing toward the team score finished no lower than tied for sixth. Marlowe Boukis posted a 73 and 75 to tie for second with Brittany Lambertson of St. John's. Susannah Aboff carded a 73 and 77 to finish alone in fourth place, while Sharla Cloutier (78-75) and freshman Michelle Grilli (75-78) each tied for sixth.
As a team, Princeton's 594 total score was 18-over, 18 shots ahead of Harvard in the 13-team event.
Princeton's next competition is Friday and Saturday at Yale for the Bulldogs' Fall Invitational.
