Artis Earns Tigers' Second Defensive Player Of The Week Honor
September 25, 2006 | Football
For the second time in as many weeks, a Princeton defensive back pulled down a pair of interceptions to lead the Tiger football team to a comeback victory over a tough Patriot League rival. And once again, the Ivy League has honored that player with the Defensive Player of the Week award.
One week after Tim Strickland's heroics led Princeton to a 14-10 win at Lehigh, J.J. Artis pulled down two fourth-quarter interceptions to lead the Tigers to a 26-14 win over Lafayette in Princeton's home opener. Both interceptions came inside the Tiger red zone, with the last one coming on a jump ball inside the end zone (pictured). It was the first multiple-interception game of Artis' career.
"J.J. made some great individual plays to help us win tonight," head coach Roger Hughes said after the game. "If you want to see perfect cornerback technique, watch his second interception. I was really proud of him for the way he played."
Besides his two interceptions, Artis made two solo tackles, broke up a pass and drew an offensive pass interference call. He is tied with Strickland for the league lead in interceptions (1.0 per game), and both are tied for second nationally.
Artis will lead Princeton into Saturday's Ivy League opener at Columbia, which will begin at 1:30 and can be heard live on 1260 WBUD AM and on GoPrincetonTigers.com.
