Men's Soccer Gets Big Win at Bucknell, 1-0
September 27, 2006 | Men's Soccer
LEWISBURG, Pa.--The Princeton men's soccer team shook up its lineup a bit heading into Wednesday night's game at red-hot Bucknell. The result was a big non-league win to end a long stretch away from home.
Freshman Ben Harms scored his first career goal in the 30th minute, thanks to a nice give-and-go feed from classmate Dion Bubar-Hall, and the Tiger defense held on from there for a 1-0 victory over the Bison that put an end to Bucknell's eight-game unbeaten streak.
Princeton (4-3-2), which broke a two-game losing skid, started four freshmen along with sophomore goalie Joe Walter, who earned his first collegiate start and had one save and the shutout. Bubar-Hall's assist came in his first career appearance in a Tiger uniform.
"We gave some guys who hadn't really played a chance tonight and they really came up big for us," said Princeton coach Jim Barlow. "We had a lot of possession in their end. Overall, it was probably our best effort of the season so far."
On the winning goal, the ball was played forward to Harms at midfield. He then found Bubar-Hall ahead, who held the ball until returning it to a charging Harms. The freshman hit a shot with his right foot across the goalmouth into the lower left corner of the net past Bucknell goalie Joey Kuterbach.
The Tigers then held Bucknell (7-2-2) to just three shots in the second half, with Walter saving Nathan LaGrave's attempt in the 49th minute. Bucknell's best scoring opportunity came early in the game, in the 10th minute, but Alex Russo's shot hit the crossbar.
Bucknell's last loss prior to Wednesday came Aug. 29 against West Virginia. The Bison had gone 7-0-1 in eight games since that loss.
Princeton returns home for the first time since Sept. 8 this Saturday when they host Dartmouth at 4 p.m. in the second half of a men's-women's doubleheader at Lourie-Love Field.
