Men's Soccer Gets Big Ivy League Win Over Dartmouth, 1-0
September 30, 2006 | Men's Soccer
Maybe it was the presence in the stands of quite a few former players, from those who graduated last year to those quite a bit older. Or maybe it was just the fact that the Princeton men's soccer team knew it couldn't afford another Ivy League loss. Whatever it was, the Tigers fashioned a great performance in defeating Dartmouth Saturday at Lourie-Love Field.
Princeton got the game-winning goal in the 34th minute, when a charging Kyle McHugh chipped a shot past Dartmouth goalie Rowan Anders, and held firm defensively in the second half on the way to a 1-0 win over the Big Green on a day where the program celebrated 100 years of soccer at Princeton.
The goal came when Jame Wunsch played a ball out of the back to Devin Muntz near midfield. The ball redirected off Muntz to McHugh, who then beat his defender and scored all alone past Anders for his second goal of the year with 10:19 left in the first half.
The win was the first for Princeton (5-3-2, 1-1 Ivy) against Dartmouth (2-4-3, 0-1-1 Ivy) at Lourie-Love Field since the 1994 season. The Tigers won their second straight game after a three-game winless streak.
Dartmouth outshot the Tigers 8-5 in the second half, but the Tiger defense and goalie Joe Walter (five saves) held firm in the final minutes. The Big Green's best chance probably came early in the half, when Walter had to deflect Tom Lobben's high ball directly down toward the goalmouth, but Dartmouth couldn't convert and Matt Kontos cleared the ball away.
McHugh had a good chance to give his team a two-goal lead with just under 10 minutes left, but Anders (four saves) dove to save a left-footed shot near the right post. Ben Harms also had a good chance earlier in the half, but his header from inside the box went left of the goal.
Both teams had 11 shots, while the Tigers did a good job of containing chances on the Big Green's six corner kicks. Walter, starting his second straight game, earned his second straight shutout.
Princeton first played soccer in 1906 and first played an intercollegiate game in 1907 against Columbia. The Tigers and Dartmouth first met in 1921.
The 2006 Tigers host 23rd-ranked Saint John's Wednesday night at Lourie-Love Field at 7:30 p.m.
