Tigers Use Strong Second Half to Defeat Loyola in Men's Soccer, 3-1
September 03, 2006 | Men's Soccer
BALTIMORE--The Princeton men's soccer team was probably a bit frustrated after playing a solid first half, only to give up a goal to Loyola on the Greyhounds' very first shot. But the Tigers took out some of that frustration with a terrific second-half performance.
Dan Cummins' first career goal tied it for Princeton in the 54th minute, and Zach Schwarz had the game winner with a solid left-foot drive from the top of the box with just under 18 minutes left, as the Tigers went on to a 3-1 victory over the Greyhounds in a game played at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field Sunday afternoon.
Cummins later had an assist on a nice give-and-go play with Mike Jester, who scored an insurance goal past Loyola goalie Justin Chelland in the 84th minute just seconds after entering the game as a substitute.
"I was real happy with how we responded today," said Princeton head coach Jim Barlow. "We could have gotten frustrated getting down a goal like that but instead we came out in the second half and made a lot of things happen."
The game winner came at the 72:35 mark, when Brian Brady's long ball from the back found the feet of Kyle McHugh. McHugh then sent a cross toward the top of the box, where Schwarz controlled it and drilled a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the net.
The tying goal for Princeton (1-0-1), just more than nine minutes into the second half, came as a result of a nice run down the right side of the field by freshman Ben Harms. After controlling the ball in the corner, his cross found Cummins, who scored into the upper right-hand corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Cummins also had a terrific scoring opportunity late in the first half, when he dribbled past several defenders in the box into a one-on-one situation with Chelland, but his attempt rolled wide left of the goal. He also had a chance early in the game when his long drive from the top of the box was deflected over the goal by Chelland.
"Dan had a terrific game, and I thought moving Zach (Schwarz) up front helped us possess the ball well when we got it forward," said Barlow. "We were able to control the play when we got the ball into dangerous positions."
Loyola (0-3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of the game when Rade Kokovic sent a long cross from the right side into the box, where it was knocked in by Julian Cantillo.
The teams were playing for the eighth consecutive season. After four straight ties from 2000-03, the Tigers have won two of the last three meetings between the schools.
Princeton outshot Loyola 14-11, while Tiger goalie Justin Oppenheimer had four saves to earn his first career victory.
The Tigers host American at Lourie-Love Field Friday night (7 p.m.).
