Matheson's Pair Lifts Women's Soccer Over Richmond, 2-0
September 08, 2006 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA -- Princeton took control of play early in Friday's women's soccer contest against Richmond and Diana Matheson's pair of goals were enough to knock off the Spiders, 2-0, at the Penn Invitational at Rhodes Field.
The Tigers evened their record at 1-1 following last Saturday's season-opening loss to Boston University. Richmond dropped to 0-5.
Following several first-half chances, Princeton finally converted with Matheson's ball from outside the 18-yard box in the 20th minute. The junior midfielder pounded an arcing shot across the box to find the left corner of the net well beyond the reach of Spider keeper Katy Hudson.
Matheson nearly had an assist as well in the 35th minute, placing a ball ahead to a charging Marci Pasenello, but Hudson dove and smothered the ball just as Pasenello prepared to tap it in an open net.
With Princeton on offense for much of the first half, the Orange and Black led 14-2 in shots taken, though only three were on net. Princeton also had five corners to Richmond's one.
Just over a minute into the second half, Matheson scored again on a pass from the midfield by freshman Vicki Anagnostopoulos, knocking it home for a 2-0 lead.
Richmond came close to halving the lead in the 53rd minute with a Kristen Stalter free kick from about 30 yards that bounced off the crossbar just above the fingertips of Princeton keeper Maren Dale and back into the field of play.
Princeton's control of the offense didn't stop with the halftime break as the Tigers outshot Richmond 24-6 and had eight corners to one for the Spiders. Dale finished with three saves to eight for Richmond's Hudson.
Princeton wraps up its run at the Penn Invitational Sunday with a noon start against Hofstra.
