Women's Soccer Sweeps Penn Invite with 4-0 Win over Hofstra
September 10, 2006 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA -- Three goals in the second half bufferred a Diana Matheson first-half goal as the Princeton women's soccer team topped Hofstra, 4-0, to end its weekend at the Penn Invitational at Rhodes Field.
The weekend sweep also raised the Tigers to a winning record at 2-1 on the young season to close Princeton's weekend at the Penn Invitational. Matheson also had a nice individual weekend with three goals and two assists for a total of eight points.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs as Hofstra dropped to 3-3. After the Tigers were shut out in the season-opener against Boston University last Saturday, Matheson scored both goals in Princeton's 2-0 Penn Invitational win over Richmond Friday.
Hofstra tipped the field early in the first half but the Tigers mounted several near-miss attacks as the period wore on. In the 27th minute, Aarti Jain booted a pass from just past midfield to Matheson charging the goal. With her defender on her heels, Matheson placed a soft shot that trickled past fallen Hofstra keeper Krystal Robens and inside the right post.
The Tigers led 6-4 in shots for the first 45 minutes with all six on net. Princeton keeper Maren Dale, who was aggressive in keeping Hofstra scoring chances from getting inside the six-yard box, had to make only one save.
The Orange and Black nearly had its second goal of the game with just over 16 minutes left in the contest. Matheson slid a pass across the box to Philadelphia-area native Meghan Farrell, who had only the keeper to beat but fired the ball just over the crossbar.
Farrell more than made up for the near-miss over the game's waning minutes. Charging up the right side of the field after taking a pass from the Hofstra half of the field, Matheson had only green in front of her and found Farrell at the goal line for an easy tip-in and a 2-0 lead in the 82nd minute.
Less than two minutes later, Farrell scored again after another pass from behind by Matheson and only new Hofstra keeper Krysten Farriella in front of her. Farriella, who entered the game at the half, fell trying to follow Farrell's moves, allowing the Princeton senior another tap-in for a 3-0 lead.
In the 85th minute, Princeton again had the ball with only the keeper to beat. This time it was Marci Pasenello who took a pass from the back by Meredith Wall and scored, giving the rookie her first career goal and a 4-0 lead.
Dale needed to make only two saves for the game to record her second straight shutout as the Tigers outshot Hofstra 21-8.
The Tigers are off from competition during the week as classes at Princeton begin Thursday, the same day the team heads to Virginia for a weekend at head coach Julie Shackford's alma mater, William & Mary. Princeton faces Virginia Commonwealth Friday before meeting the host Tribe Sunday.
