January 14, 2007 | Women's Ice Hockey
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The 10th-ranked Princeton women's hockey team scored two goals in the first and third periods to blank Union 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Messa Rink. The win salvaged a weekend split for the Tigers who improve to 12-9-2 overall and 10-5-1 in the ECAC Hockey League.
Princeton controlled the game from the opening faceoff, outshooting Union 50-10 in the game and outscoring the Dutchwomen 5-0. Senior Laura Watt started things off for the Tigers six minutes into the game when she scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Her goal came unassisted and was scored at 5:55. It was her sixth goal of the season.
Junior Marykate Oakley made it a 2-0 Princeton lead at 12:47 of the first period with her first of two goals in the contest. This goal came on the power play and was assisted by sophomore Katherine Dineen and senior Kate Hession. Oakley then made the score 3-0 with the only goal of the second period. That tally came unassisted at 5:37.
The Tigers added two more goals in the final period. First at 5:21, junior Brittany Salmon connected for her sixth goal of the season, also from Hession, who recorded her second-straight two-assist game of the weekend. Princeton closed out the scoring at 9:34 of the final period when senior Dina McCumber scored the team's second power-play goal of the game. It was her fourth goal of the season and was set up by sophomore Christine Foster and senior Allison Ralph.
Sophomore Kristen Young stopped all 10 shots she faced for the win, while Amanda Hanson stopped 45 of the 50 shots she saw in the Union goal.
The Tigers are off for the next two weekends during the final exam period. The Tigers return to the ice in three weekends when Brown and Yale visit Baker Rink the first weekend in February.
