Princeton Falls to U.S. Under-18 Team in Exhibition Action
January 05, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- The U.S. National Under-18 Team scored two goals in the second period to pull away from the Princeton men's hockey team and take a 4-2 win on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Freshmen Jody Pederson and Dan Bartlett scored for Princeton in the game.
Ryan Hayes opened the scoring for the U.S. on an outstanding individual effort midway through the first period. Hayes' end-to-end rush gave Team USA a lead that lasted for three minutes before the Tigers evened the score.
The goal came off the rush and was scored by Pederson. Sophomore Brett Wilson started the play in the Tiger defensive end and passed it ahead to freshman Cam MacIntyre who found Pederson on the far side for the goal at 13:33 of the period.
The U.S. squad opened up a lead in the second period on goals at 9:44 and 12:10. First Colin Wilson scored on a rebound at the far post, then Cade Fairchild scored on a point shot.
Princeton moved back within a goal at 14:06 of the third period with the night's lone power-play goal. Wilson worked the puck to freshman Kevin Crane at the point and Crane unleashed a shot that Bartlett deflected up over U.S. netminder Josh Unice and into the goal.
Princeton pressured over the remaining minutes but Mike Hoeffel scored an empty-net goal with 20 seconds remaining to cap the scoring.
Unice made 43 saves in the U.S. goal for the win, while sophomore Thomas Sychterz made 22 saves for Princeton.
The Tigers return to league play tomorrow night when they host 16th-ranked Quinnipiac at 7 p.m., in a game that will be televised live on NESN.
