Quinnipiac Edges Princeton 2-0

PRINCETON -- Jamie Bates scored his first of two goals at 4:41 of the third period to snap a scoreless tie and lead 16th-ranked Quinnipiac to a 2-0 win against the Princeton men's hockey team on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Bates capped the scoring with an empty-net goal with 44 seconds remaining.
Both goaltenders, Quinnipiac's Bud Fisher and Princeton freshman Zane Kalemba shined throughout the game in keeping the puck out of the net. Princeton outshot Quinnipiac 10-8 in the opening period and Quinnipiac held a 12-6 lead in shots in the second period but none of the first 36 shots on goal found the back of the net.
Quinnipiac opened the scoring with a goal 4:41 into the third period. The Bobcats controlled the puck low in the Tiger end when the puck found Bates at the right hashmark. He took a quick shot that eluded Kalemba to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
From that point on, Quinnipiac tightened up its defense and held Princeton at bay before Bates scored into an open goal late to add insurance.
Quinnipiac outshot Princeton 30-23 in the game. Fisher made 23 saves for the shutout while Kalemba made 28 saves in the loss.
Princeton fell a game below .500 to 7-8-2 overall and 4-6-1 in the ECACHL, while Quinnipiac is now 9-5-4 overall and 6-2-3 in the league. The teams complete their home-and-home series on Tuesday night at Quinnipiac.
