Princeton Knocks Off No. 19 Quinnipiac
January 09, 2007 | Men's Ice Hockey
NORTHFORD, Conn. -- The Princeton men's hockey team climbed to .500 with a 4-2 win at No. 19 Quinnipiac on Tuesday night at the Northford Ice Pavilion. The Tigers improved to 7-2-1 in their last 10 games with the win and climbed to third in the ECACHL standings.
The Tigers opened the scoring in what was an evenly played first period. Junior Landis Stankievech started things off with his fourth goal of the season at 4:52 of the period. Junior Kyle Hagel cleared the puck out of the Tiger end to senior Kevin Westgarth in the neutral zone, who dropped it off for Stankievech. Stankievech drove to the net and after his initial shot was saved, lifted the rebound over the pad of Quinnipiac goaltender Bud Fisher.
Quinnipiac evened things up with a power-play goal on the only penalty of the period. With freshman Kevin Kaiser flagged for holding, Chris Myers slid a loose puck into the Princeton goal to even the score at 1-1. David Marshall took the primary shot that was saved by Tiger freshman netminder Zane Kalemba, but the puck ended up behind him and was sitting in the crease where Myers found it for the goal.
After an even first period, the Tigers got the better of the chances in the second period as sophomore Brett Wilson gave Princeton a 2-1 lead at the 13:22 mark. The period took awhile to get going but Princeton outshot the Bobcats 19-11 in the stanza. Wilson gave the Tigers the lead when he spun around and took a quick wrist shot along the ice that eluded Fisher. Princeton had held possession in the zone on the play and Wilson collected the rebound of a shot from junior Mike Moore for his fifth goal of the season.
The Bobcats stormed out in the third period looking to even the score, taking the first five shots on goal of the period, but Princeton converted on its first chance and got the insurance it needed. Senior Darroll Powe scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season at 4:16 of the period when freshman Mark Magnowski created a turnover and sprung a Tiger 2-on-1 and sophomore Lee Jubinville fed Powe at the last moment as the Tigers took a 3-1 lead.
Quinnipiac controlled play for much of the period as the Bobcats had three power-play chances but were unable to convert. Bryan Leitch had what looked to be a goal with 1:06 remaining, but the goal was disallowed because of goaltender interference. Princeton promptly responded 15 seconds later when Magnowski scored an empty-net goal from center ice to give Princeton a 4-1 lead.
Kalemba stopped 34 shots in the game as he improved to 7-5-1 on the season. Fisher made 32 saves in the Quinnipiac goal.
Princeton returns to action on Friday night when it hosts Yale at 7 p.m.
